Five years back, Illustration House sold an original New Yorker spot drawing by Hans Stengel (1894-1928). It depicts a flower pot with a zigzag pattern and handles in the form of cartoon animal heads. It is intended to decorate a small horizontal portion of a magazine page.
Note: Hans Stengel's original art is something that you don't see every day, or at least I don't. If you do, or know where to track down a bit of it, I know a nice blog where scans and photos can be shared with the world.

Hans Stengel eBay Bid History Two mild-mannered bidders duke it out. |
It seems more than likely this spot appeared in The New Yorker at some time during its first two years. Anyone who can be more specific than that, do be sure to write.
